Arsenal have had their hopes of hijacking Manchester United’s move for Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong boosted after his past comments about his planned career path were uncovered.
Spanish giants Barca may have to cash in on the Dutch midfielder this summer amid ongoing speculation about their financial situation. New United manager Erik ten Hag is said to be interested in reuniting with his former Ajax ace, although De Jong’s previous statement suggests the player himself would prefer to make the switch to Arsenal.
It comes as Wolves technical director Scott Sellars has said the club are being “realistic” about being able to keep hold of Gunners target Ruben Neves this summer. And Lucas Torreira has made his future plans perfectly clear to Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta with his move to Fiorentina on the verge of collapse.
De Jong hopes boosted
Frenkie de Jong’s past comments have suggested he may prefer a move to Arsenal rather than Manchester United this summer.
The Barcelona star could be one the move should his club receive an offer in the region of £60million for him this summer. And while United have been widely tipped to swoop for him, De Jong himself has previously said he would have liked to follow his idol Marc Overmars’ career route.
While De Jong may have already played for Barca, the comments from 2019 may suggest Arsenal have more chance of signing him than Manchester United do.
‘Realistic’ Neves message sent
Wolves are remaining “realistic” over their hopes of keeping hold of star midfielder and Arsenal target Ruben Neves this summer, according to technical director Scott Sellars.
Neves is one of a number of players being linked with a move to the Gunners to help solve Mikel Arteta’s problems in midfield. Sellars says the Portugal international has “shown how happy he is here” and that from the club’s point of view “the ideal situation is that we want him to stay”.
But the Wolves chief also knows that “when you have an outstanding player, the top clubs are going to come and see what the situation is”.
Torreira makes stance clear
Lucas Torreira remains determined to leave Arsenal this summer despite Fiorentina failing to stump up the money to make his loan move permanent.
