Matt Turner is celebrating his 28th birthday today (June 24), and some Arsenal supporters on social media think the conditions are perfect for a transfer announcement.
The USNMT goalkeeper’s move to north London is potentially the worst-kept secret in all of football, especially when his current club New England Revolution revealed in February that they had reached an agreement with the Gunners for a £4.5m transfer that could rise to £7.5m with further bonuses.
“The New England Revolution have agreed to terms for goalkeeper Matt Turner to join Arsenal of the English Premier League in a summer transfer for an undisclosed fee pending completion of a medical,” a statement via their official website read.
Almost five months have passed without any official comment from Arsenal – although it is their policy to only communicate deals for players extending their contracts, joining/re-joining the club, or leaving once a deal is completed.
Furthermore, as previously reported by football.london, the Gunners’ plan all along has been to make an announcement when Turner flies over to the UK to undergo a medical and then sign his contract. This should be any day after revealing his flight was booked for last weekend.
“My official release [from Revolution] is the 24th of June,” he said when speaking to Fox Sports earlier in the month. “I think the Revs have games on the 19th of June and then the 26th. So, I would be available for selection for the 19th but not the 26th. My flight’s booked for right after that game on the 19th.
“My wife is actually heading over three weeks before that because she’s due in July, and she’s got to get over there before that 36-week mark, so we’re gonna be split apart for three weeks. But she’ll be over there. I’ll get out there and then do my medical and get ready for a new season to start.”
Judging by Turner’s recent Instagram Stories post, he appears to have been reunited with his wife in England, so all that remains is for all the formalities regarding his Arsenal transfer to be completed so he can become the club’s third signing of the summer after Marquinhos and Fabio Vieira.
For many Gunners supporters on Twitter, the ideal time for the club to finally confirm Turner’s move is today as @lilt2 said: “Matt Turner confirmation would be a lovely start to the weekend @Arsenal, @f1lover75 agreed: “it is @headdturnerr’s birthday today, and it will be a GREAT day for @arsenal to reveal him as their latest signing” and @Lacazest said: “Happy birthday, Matt! Looking forward to officially having you become a part of the Gooner family (maybe today,@Arsenal?)”
