Liverpool “dodged a bullet” when they were first interested in Timo Werner and should not try and sign him from Chelsea, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker claimed Werner is like Fernando Torres because he looks like a “different player” at Chelsea.
A recruitment source told Football Insider last week (23 June) that Liverpool are plotting a move for the 26-year-old but no discussions have taken place between the two clubs.
The Merseyside giants were interested in Werner before he joined Chelsea in 2020 and believe he may be better suited to Jurgen Klopp’s style of play.
The Germany international has scored just 10 times in 56 Premier League appearances for the Blues and Agbonlahor has claimed he will not refind his goalscoring form at Anfield.
He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I don’t think Timo Werner is an option for Liverpool.
“Yes, [Roberto] Firmino is not playing his best football and might leave but Timo Werner has shown at Chelsea he is short of confidence in front of goal.
“He reminds me a bit of Fernando Torres when he was at Chelsea and really struggled with the basics. He was such a good player at Liverpool but then a totally different player for Chelsea, it was like someone had taken his powers.
“Timo Werner looks like a different player to who Liverpool signed. I don’t think where Liverpool are, ahead of Chelsea in terms of squad quality, I don’t think they would want to sign a player who is not good enough for Chelsea.
“I don’t see that happening and I think they dodged a bullet when they were first interested in him.”
