It’s been a difficult year for Austrian midfielder Marcel Sabizter.
The former RB Leipzig player spent seven years under the Red Bull umbrella, six years at Leipzig and one spent on loan at Salzburg, before finally completing a move to the big time with a switch to Bayern Munich just under a year ago.
However, things haven’t worked out quite like he and Bayern wanted. Sabizter struggled last season in Bavaria. Signed on the final day of the 2021 summer transfer window, Sabizter should have been an instant success at the club, given that Bayern are coached by Julian Nagelsmann, whom he worked under at Leipzig.

But competition is fierce at Bayern and Sabizter found himself on the bench more often than not. He made 32 appearances in all competitions, but that only amounted to nine starts and just over 1,000 minutes of football.
Even in a Bayern Munich side that was less than stellar in 2021/22, he struggled to make his mark, and rumours have circulated that the German champions could already cut ties with Sabizter and let him go this summer, should a suitable offer arrive.
The likes of Roma, Arsenal and Tottenham are all thought to be interested in signing the 28-year-old, but should Liverpool join the race to sign the Austrian?
Sabizter plays primarily as a central midfielder, and wouldn’t be a bad alternative for Liverpool in terms of having another body able to play in the middle of the park when the club no doubt pick up an injury or two next season.
We saw this last season when by Christmas every one of the club’s midfielders except Jordan Henderson had been out with one or injury or another. The captain was forced to play nearly every game due to the lack of numbers.
Sabizter is capable of playing on the right-hand side of midfield or in the middle, so he could be a vice-Fabinho (with different characteristics), or play alongside the Brazilian. His versatility could be an added boost to Jürgen Klopp during what is a long English season.
Furthermore, Sabizter could reportedly leave for as little as £12.8m, and given the open channel of communications between Liverpool and Bayern in the wake of the Sadio Mané deal, coming to an agreement for Sabizter shouldn’t represent too much of an issue.
With the club unwilling to spend big in the transfer market this summer on a midfielder as they opt to wait for Jude Bellingham, Sabizter could be a shrewd alternative for a year. Despite an average year at Bayern, he’s a very good player and at that price, Liverpool would be foolish to pass up the chance to at least speak to him about a move. After all, he has the Red Bull grounding that is so cherished by the recruitment staff.
But with the club seemingly putting the brakes on any new signings after announcing Calvin Ramsay, Sabizter could end up elsewhere. With Mané sorted, Liverpool and Bayern Munich may well be stepping away from the negotiating table, at least for now.
