New World: Fishing Leveling Guide

New World, the fantasy MMORPG from Amazon Games, is approaching its first month anniversary. The beginning of a new MMO is always an exciting time, as players spread out across the world, fighting, exploring, and crafting. New World puts a special focus on its crafting mechanics, and gives players 17 Trade Skills to master.

The Trade Skills of New World are divided into Gathering, Refining, and Crafting. One of the most useful Gathering Skills is Fishing, which allows players to catch fish for both Cooking and Arcana recipes. However, to catch the best fish successfully, players will need to level up their Fishing Skill level.

How to Level Fishing in New World

Before players can begin fishing in Aeternum, they’ll first need to find a fishing pole, or craft one using New World‘s Engineering Skill. Fishing Poles come in five different tiers, increasing casting distance, tension recovery, and fish rarity. Players may also want to invest in cooking or looting some Bait, which increases the chances of catching a rare fish.

Like every Gathering skill in New World, all players need to do to gain Fishing XP is to go Fishing. There are over 80 fishing hotspots spread across the island of Aeternum, and they’re rated based on the rarity of the fish they contain. These nodes can be fished out, at which point they’ll respawn between 20 and 90 minutes later.

How to Farm Fishing XP in New World

While catching any fish will grant XP, the most efficient way to level up New World‘s Fishing Skill may actually surprise some players. Firstly, rarer fish give more XP when caught, as do bigger fish, so players should use the best Fishing Pole and Bait they have available. However, instead of aiming for the 3-star fishing hotspots, players should camp at a quiet 2-star spot and stay there even after it despawns.

This technique works because 2-star spots contain around 15-25 fish, while 3-star spots have only 8-10. Although the fish in the 3-star spots are more likely to be rare, the extra XP for each catch isn’t enough to counter how many more fish players will get from a 2-star.

In addition, 2-star spots respawn more quickly, allowing even more efficient XP farming. That being said, players who are simply looking for the best fish in New World rather than the most XP would do better moving between 3-star spots on a rotation.

New World is out now for PC.
