Propagate International secures sales for TMZ Johnny Depp–Amber Heard doc
Propagate International, the global distribution arm of independent content studio Propagate, has secured a raft of international sales for the hour-long documentary special TMZ Presents Johnny vs. Amber: From Love to Hate,which chronicles the deteriorating relationship between Hollywood stars Johnny Depp and Amber Heard prior to the couple’s high-profile defamation trial in summer 2022.
The doc, which aired on the Fox network (whose parent owns TMZ) in the U.S. in June, has been licensed to Nine Network (Australia), M6 (France), Viaplay (Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, the Netherlands, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania), TV2 (Norway), BAM (Southeast Asia), TV Nova (Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia), SBS (Dutch-speaking Belgium), RTL (French-speaking Belgium), and ETV (South Africa).
Propagate is also distributing two upcoming TMZ documentaries that will premiere on Fox: TMZ Investigates: Who REALLY Killed Michael Jackson and TMZ Investigates: What REALLY Happened to Richard Simmons.
Greenwich Entertainment acquires distribution rights to Hockeyland doc
Indie distributor Greenwich Entertainment has acquired the North American distribution rights to the documentary feature Hockeyland (pictured), about rival high school hockey teams in Minnesota’s North Country, one of the breeding grounds for hockey greats.
Greenwich has set a September 9 theatrical release date for the film, which will open in Minneapolis and other cities in the U.S. Midwest before gradually expanding in the U.S. and Canada. A digital release will follow in October.
Produced by Northland Films, a Midwest-based non-fiction film company, Hockeyland is directed by Tommy Haines, produced by Tommy Haines, Andrew Sherburne and JT Haines, and executive produced by Carson Kipfer. The film has played at film festivals including DOC NYC, Big Sky, Seattle, Milwaukee, RiverRun and more.
“We’re thrilled to be partnering with Greenwich on the release of Hockeyland,” said Haines in a statement. “Their proven track record with action-oriented documentaries and art-house audiences is a perfect combination for an observational, coming-of-age hockey story.”
Steel Springs Pictures partners with viral card game for non-fiction projects
L.A.- and Australia-based prodco Steel Springs Pictures has partnered with popular card game We’re Not Really Strangers to create an exclusive slate of projects and formats, both non-fiction and scripted, that expand on the game’s brand.
Created and launched by L.A.-based model and artist Koreen Odiney in 2018, We’re Not Really Strangers became a viral global hit during the pandemic, as its quiz-based format that aims to “empower meaningful connections” between people resonated with many during lockdown.
The deal is the first announced partnership under Steel Springs Pictures’ recently launched non-fiction division, which is led by former OWN/Harpo executive Jonathan Sinclair (Oprah’s Master Class, Iyanla Fix My Life). Sinclair is spearheading development and production on a range of unscripted content under the Steel Springs banner alongside company founder and producer Peter Lawson (Spotlight, John Wick), producing content both in-house and with external partners.
“Joining forces with We’re Not Really Strangers was a no-brainer as a first project out the gate,” Sinclair said in a release. “We are exploring formats and specials that dig into all relationships: dating, family, marriage, and more. The game offers rich and unlimited material around the dynamics of human connection, which lends itself perfectly to wildly entertaining and meaningful projects for the screen.”
