WATCH: Johnny Depp’s lawyer says star’s partial appeal is due to Amber Heard’s filing

Attorney Camille Vasquez, who recently represented Johnny Depp in his defamation lawsuit against ex-wife Amber Heard, explained they’ve filed an appeal because the Aquaman actress filed one first.

Vasquez appeared for a television interview on Thursday, nearly a week after Depp filed his appeal, which only came one day after Heard filed her own appeal. CBS Mornings host Gayle King asked Vasquez if she and Depp would have appealed if Heard had not done so first. The attorney agreed it is “fair” to say that they appealed because Heard did first.

While Heard is attempting to appeal the verdict that found her liable for defaming Depp, he is appealing the $2 million award the jury allotted Heard when it found Depp liable for defaming her on one count.

Heard’s lawyers will have until Sept. 4 to file their appeal, complete with arguments. Depp’s lawyers will have until Sept. 5. Vazquez said she “expected” Heard’s appeal and that the responding appeal is meant “to protect our client’s interest.”

“I mean, she’s indicated since the day she lost the trial that she was going to appeal,” the now-partner at Brown Rudnick said.

Vasquez said she felt “lucky” to represent Depp in this most recent case but was “disappointed” by the rumors that she was dating her celebrity client. The lawyer previously laughed off questions about dating in another interview.

Vasquez most recently helped Depp settle an assault lawsuit, filed against him by a former crew member of a film the actor was in. Gregg “Rocky” Brooks alleged that Depp punched him in the stomach but retracted his suit after receiving an undisclosed settlement.
